Drummond second graders attend field trip to Gateway Arch

Second graders in Demi Fogarty's class took a field trip to the Gateway Arch on Friday as part of their social studies unit on U.S. symbols and monuments. They have learned about U.S. monuments and symbols such as the Statue of Liberty, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and Gateway Arch. 

"[On Thursday], we Zoomed with Ranger Carl from the Arch,” Fogarty said. “He taught us about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and explained how the Gateway Arch honors all the explorers that set off to journey to the West.”

The Drummond Elementary students took a tram ride to the top, toured the museum and watched a documentary about the building of the Gateway Arch.

MacLeans help spread awareness of diabetes to Parkwood students

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and fourth grader Amelia MacLean has helped her classmates understand her experiences of dealing with Type 1 diabetes since she was 5 years old.
 
Today, the fourth grade teachers at Parkwood Elementary School, who were all wearing Support Squad #DiabetesAwareness T-shirts, had children’s book author Laura Heitert, the wife of the school’s DARE officer Bob Heitert, come and talk about her book “Maddie’s Me Bag” with their students. Art teacher Janel MacLean helped set up this opportunity to spread awareness of diabetes.

Holman science students participate in STEM-based activities

Science classes at Holman Middle School had employees from ThermoFisher Scientific visit and lead STEM-based projects with students on Nov. 12. 

Kayela Schoen, an environmental health and safety specialist, instructed students through several activities in Teresa Hutti’s science classes.

Nov. 8 was National STEM Day and the local ThermoFisher Scientific manufacturing plant is in Berkeley.

“We're really interested in giving back to the community and we wanted to expose students to some possible STEM careers and talk to them while playing games, building relationships and having fun,” she said. “We are science people, it’s what we do, so we came into these classes to share our knowledge, have fun and let the students talk to us”

Luraschi presents at several recent conferences

Pattonville High School college and career preparation coordinator/counselor Michelle Luraschi has been a co-presenter or served on a panel at several recent conferences. She’s been a part of the Missouri School Counselor Association Conference, Missouri Association of Student Financial Aid Personnel Conference, and STEMSTL’s Annual Gathering.

Boys swimming team has several student-athletes compete at state championships

The high school boys swimming team had several student-athletes compete at the Class 2 state championships on Nov. 12-13 at the City of St. Peters Rec Plex.

Wyatt Martin placed 6th in the 50 yard freestyle and finished 16th in the 100 yard breaststroke. Isaac Reddy earned 16th place in the 100 yard freestyle advancing to the finals after winning a swim-off by .04 seconds.

Wang announced as finalist in the “I Voted” sticker contest

Pattonville High School junior Tara Wang was announced as a finalist in the St. Louis County Board of Elections and St. Louis County Library “I Voted” sticker contest.

After nearly 7,000 votes were cast, Wang’s artwork was chosen by the public as the best in the 9th-12th grade category. Her design along with the other two finalists will be professionally printed into the “I Voted” stickers and distributed to all polling places throughout the county beginning in 2022.
