Science came to life in the fourth grade classrooms at Parkwood Elementary School. The students worked to research plants and animals from various biomes and transformed their classrooms to represent what they learned about the ocean, rainforest, savannah and tundra.

On Dec. 21, other grade level classes toured the biomes and listened to presentations from the fourth graders.

The fourth grade teachers are Kristen McGreer, Audrey Masek, Lindsey Schaefer and Greg Stoltz.

Margaret Hall’s classroom at Pattonville High School became a makeshift cafe through a project based learning assignment with her fifth hour French 2 students.

“Between Thanksgiving and now, my classes got to decide whatever they wanted to study, and this class wanted to learn more about French food and created a cafe.”

Junior Jasey Rosenkoetter works at Starbucks and said opening up a coffee shop came to her immediately.

“Coffee is always on my mind and I thought it would be really fun,” she said. “Teachers and staff have to order in French and we would bring them their drink and food.”

Students came up with a list of menu items to offer guests and created a Google sites website.

Janel MacLean started customizing shoes for Parkwood Elementary School students last year as a way to help them freshen up their old shoes. "That was the spark that I needed," MacLean said. "If she could do it for 22 students, I could do it for every one of my fifth graders."

On Dec. 13, students attended an assembly where they were surprised with their very own pair of the popular Nike shoes.

Remington students study global water crisis, raise money to help

Fourth graders at Remington Traditional learned about the global water crisis and raised $500 for water.org during a project based learning assignment. Students and guests attended a water fair on Dec. 2 to hear the fourth graders’ presentations and to purchase water bottle stickers that the students created.

“The students wrote essays about the different countries after they did research using nonfiction books and water.org’s website,” teacher Julie Linck said. “Then we came together as a class to talk about how we can help.”

The students voted on making something to sell in order to raise money and collaborated with district technology specialist Stephanie McCreary after she introduced the Canva app to classroom teachers Linck and Alyssa Lipson.
