It’s been Jasmine Gray’s dream to be a doctor since she was 5 years old. On Thursday, she got another step closer to making that dream come true.
The Pattonville High School Biomedical Sciences White Coat Ceremony was held on Thursday, Sept. 2, in the main gym to recognize Gray and 22 other students who have successfully completed coursework in Pattonville's nationally certified biomedical sciences program. More than 120 parents, students and staff from every school in Pattonville met at a districtwide Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) meeting on Aug. 31 to review potential plans for facility updates and to prioritize the needs for their buildings. Representatives from the architectural firm Ittner Cordogan Clark Group, along with Pattonville district and school leaders, were on hand to share the district’s work to date on developing a new master facilities plan and answer questions. The individual school improvement teams heard an overview from the architects and then met and discussed the project lists developed for their schools.
There are many ways to reward students for good behavior. A Remington Traditional teacher dyed her hair blue to reward hers.
Libby Hilker, a second grade teacher, rewarded her students for earning more marbles than her in August by changing the color of her hair.
“Every time they do something exceptional or just way above and beyond or if I notice a really great act of kindness, they get a marble,” she said. “Anytime they need to work on something a little bit, I get a marble.”
The class decided they were going to make a challenge out of it and at the end of the first month of school, the students had 208 marbles. Hilker had only 188.
Posters with names and pictures of notable people are hanging up in the hallways at Holman Middle School. It’s not just decoration. Pirate Academy and seventh grade students are using the QR codes printed on each sheet for a scavenger hunt.
Math and science teacher Emily Difani said science teachers Teresa Hutti and Natalie Walker created the posters for about 50 diverse professionals.
“We wanted a way for students to see that scientists and inventors look like themselves,” Difani said. “A lot of them are actually located in the St. Louis area and we learned about them through the STEM Teacher Quality (TQ) Institute.”
